Kathryn and I did some testing today with a new model and a face/body painter. We wanted to do a small test, these are full plates, before doing a huge body painting session. The stars are white and two different shades of blue. This is the models natural skin tone. Kathryn and I traveled to Paris in May of this year. We spent one of our days in the Musée d'Orsay. We walked into one of the many rooms of paintings and Ingres's The Source looked right into our eyes. It is a breath taking painting. This image of model Tori Pie was made in our open air North Light studio in Sacramento. Kathryn and i made this together working like a team. It is so much fun to work side by side with my wife. The Full plate was made at 3:01 pm with a Tessar 4.5 lens , bounce light. We had some development scum problems but worked them out by adding old development to the new about 10ml to 300 ml. This image was shot at 3:30 at North Light Studio. I used the Darlot, wide open, in the sweet spot with a 7 second exposure. The wig was made by the model Karolyn Mayo. It's beautiful work. She has since added an Old Ship and Large Squid to the top portion of the wig. Douglas Winter04-21-2010

This diptych "la sirène repose sur des settee" was shot last Sunday in our North Light Studio. It's comprised of (2) 5x7 plates for an over all image size of 5x14". The exposures were 6 seconds for the head and shoulders and 9 seconds for the legs. The light was going down quickly so the exposure had to increase. The F Stop was 2 and the image was shot left to right and composed backwards because

This wet plate titled dévoilée was made on Sunday, February 7th in our open air North Light studio. The full plate is 6.5" x 8.5" and is one of 3 full plates made during this session. We are using a Darlot Petzval lens on an 8x10 view camera. I stopped down one stop from wide open. The image continues our religious series.

This ancient prayer ritual reenactment was captured when the sky was dark, brooding and the wind blew cold. Small coin shaped drops appeared on the ground as the exposures were made. The images are made using the wet plate collodion process. Two 5x7" plates make up the diptych and it's approximately 10x7".Douglas Winter

I entered one of the first the tin types (wet plate collodion process) I ever made to the PhotoPlace alternative process show. The small 4x5" plate was accepted. It's a portrait of my wife Kathryn Mayo who taught the wet plate process to me. I'm pretty stoked about it as I have just been making plates for past few months. I have really turned my back on all digital production of images.

This is a profile image I made and used for my studio lighting class demo. Being able to see the eyelash on the opposite side of the eye is the mark a "true profile". What's strange is that the model took scissors to her hair the night before the photo shoot and had a bald patch on the camera side of her head. So retouching was in order.Douglas Winter 09/21/09

Koosha contacted me through Model Mayhem to make some fitness photographs of him. He sent some images along with the email and when I saw them I immediately thought: Man of Steel. Here are the final images that will Run in the September 2008 issue of Sacramento Magazine.
